April 13 event to benefit homeless services

April 13 event to benefit homeless services

The “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun takes place on Saturday, April 13, at Lakeview Lanes in Fulton. This is the 12th annual fund-raising bowling tournament hosted by Oswego County Opportunities.  “But is so much more than a bowling event,” said OCO Executive Director Diane Cooper-Currier.” There will be raffles, trivia, contests, door prize drawings, a silent auction, live music, a chicken barbecue, activities for kids, and a food drive all wrapped into one action-packed afternoon of fun with a purpose – to help those facing homelessness.”

The face of homelessness is diverse, Cooper-Currier noted. For example, OCO Homeless Service recently worked with twins whose parents were unable to care for them, and OCO helped a close relative get the referrals needed to obtain custody and provide a stable home situation.

Another situation involved a young woman approximately halfway through a pregnancy, living in a potentially unstable home situation but did not have family or friends in the area that she could stay with. Homeless Services worked with other OCO programs to provide help for the baby, and to collect benefits that would help provide support.

“As you can see, some of our successes involve intervening before a person ends up on the street,” Cooper-Currier said. “Advocacy and help navigating the legal system, referrals to other OCO programs, or connections to outside agencies, can lead to stability that permits someone to remain in their current home, or find a new place to live.”

This year’s fund raiser was dubbed the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun because it is taking place on 4-13-13. “Thirteen is usually associated with superstition and bad luck, but we’re turning that around and making it a lucky day, with many chances to win raffles, door prizes, silent auction items, and more!”  Cooper-Currier stated.

The “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun takes place from noon – 6:00 pm at Lakeview Lanes in Fulton. Businesses and individuals are invited to donate door prizes for the raffles and silent auction, and major sponsors are being solicited as well.

“If you can’t participate in our activities on April 13, you can still help,” Cooper-Currier continued. “We are accepting pledges from the community towards the event, and we are also selling raffle tickets at $5 each or 3 for $13. We have three great prizes: Over $450 worth of camping gear, a getaway for two to Vernon Downs Casino, and a dinner cruise for two on Skaneateles Lake or the Erie Canal. Call 598-4717 to get tickets. Only a few tickets remain so call before they sell out!” Any remaining tickets will be sold at Lakeview Lanes during the Bowl-A-Fun event.

In addition to support for existing services, OCO will set aside a percentage of the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun proceeds to build financial resources for the future. “There is a vision for a homeless shelter in Oswego County,” Cooper-Currier said. “As the community action agency for Oswego County, we strongly support this vision because it aligns perfectly with OCO’s mission.”
