Oswego County Health Department Raises Funds for OCO SAF Program

Oswego County Health Department Raises Funds for OCO SAF Program

The Oswego County Health Department recently presented Oswego County Opportunities’ (OCO) Services to Aid Families (SAF) Program with a donation of $145.

“The donations were collected as part of National Public Health Week,” said Public Health Educator Sonia Robinson. “The staff at the Health Department focused on a particular public health topic each day and we wanted to identify ways each of us could make a difference to help create a healthier community.”

Pictured from left are: Robinson, Diane Oldenburg, Sr. Public Health Educator; Vera Dunsmoor, Director of Patient Services; Sara Carmichael, SAF Advocate/Educator; Stacie France, SAF Community Response Coordinator; and Emily Boyle, Public Health Educator.

“Staff raised the money by giving a donation so they could wear jeans to work,” said Dunsmoor. “We wanted to recognize the great work that the SAF Program does in our community and support them and their clients in any way we could.”

“The donation from the Health Department was a wonderful surprise,” said France. “Our domestic violence shelter has been very full over the past several months. Many of the families who enter shelter come to us with limited resources so we are grateful for any donation and support from our community partners.”

SAF is the domestic violence and rape crisis program serving Oswego County. SAF has provided crisis, support, advocacy, and education services for 40 years. In 2018, SAF served more than 600 victims and survivors.

“We also saw a substantial increase in the number of victims and survivors we served in 2018 as a result of increased awareness and more individuals feeling safe and supported enough to seek services,” said France. “Monetary donations help us meet the unmet needs of clients in ways that aren’t always covered under our grant funding.”

If you or someone you know is a victim or survivor of domestic violence, dating violence, sexual violence or stalking, please call SAF’s Crisis Hotline at (315) 342-1600. The hotline is available 24 hours a day and is free and confidential.
